The City of Austin has found a way to incorporate the slogan “keep Austin weird” into Travis County’s property tax system by challenging the 2015 commercial tax roll. Specifically, the City challenged Travis County Appraisal District’s (TCAD) valuations for the categories of F1 Commercial Real Properties (office, retail and industrial) and C1 Vacant Lots (commercial vacant land). Interestingly, the challenge excluded category B, Multi-family Residences, which makes up a sizable component of the commercial tax roll.
